Au pif is an expression that means randomly.

This expression, it can also mean approximately.

So, it's not really random, but it's really at a glance.

You could answer me at random 3 meters.

That means it's pretty approximate, you don't really know, but you say a little bit randomly like that, as it seems to you. But of course, you don't have meters to measure.

For example, you can also use this expression in cooking. If you don't have scales to weigh the ingredients, you'll make a recipe that's a bit haphazard. You'll say well, I didn't have any scales, so I put the sugar, the flour, the milk in a bit of a haphazard way as I saw fit. I did the best I could without really being able to measure. As you can see, "au pif" can mean at random, so it's blind.
