LEARN FRENCH IN 2 MINUTES - French idiom: C'est l'hôpital qui moque de la charité (It's the hospital that laughs at the charity)

Transcript of the video

Hi everyone, hope you're well.

Welcome to this format of short videos where we see each time a French expression.

Today, we're going to take a look at the expression "the pot calling the kettle black".

Before starting, remember to activate the French subtitles.

It will help you better understand and remember all the new words or anything we're going to see in this video.

It's the pot calling the kettle black, or the pot calling the kettle black.

If we say, c'est l'hôpital qui se fout de la charité, the expression is really very, very colloquial, whereas c'est l'hôpital qui se moque de la charité can be used in more contexts.

But what does this expression mean?

When we use it, we mean to say to someone who reproaches us or points out a fault. When this person also has this flaw, is also doing something wrong.

You will certainly understand better with some context.

For example, if I've eaten all the potato chips in my house and someone blames me for it, my husband will blame me and tell me you've eaten all the potato chips.

I'll tell him it's the pot calling the kettle black. You ate all my yoghurt.

So you see, someone reproaches me, but I find that person to be no better than I am.

She's making the same mistakes I'm making, so I'm going to tell her it's the pot calling the kettle black. Here's another context.

For example, at work, I can say.

My boss reproaches me by saying that I take too long a lunch break at noon, whereas I only take an hour. I can tell it's the pot calling the kettle black.

He leaves every day at noon and returns at 2 pm.

It takes twice as long. It's the pot calling the kettle black.

So he reproaches me and he does the same thing, even worse.

And that's it for the expression of the day.

I hope you enjoyed this video. If you did, remember to give it a thumbs-up and, above all, subscribe to the channel.

It helps me a lot and allows me to make more videos.

See you soon on Hellofrench.
